Cheap Kitchen makeover: Before and After

I have a really nice apartment but the kitchen needed some work. When I moved in it was completely white but some of the walls were really dirty. The kitchen was the worst, there were a lot of food stains behind the stove and near the fridge.

The second issue is that my kitchen and living room occupy the same space, loft style. The high ceilings of this parlor floor apartment help keep the airy feel but I wanted to define the two spaces.

I picked a sunny yellow for the kitchen, and a light aqua blue for the wall. I was going for a robins egg blue but I think the girl at Lows gave me the wrong color. It was obnoxious at first but looked way better when it dried, like most drunk people

Recycled Fashion: IKEA Bag dress made by parsons professor

I love Ikea hacker for so many reasons the first of which is that its hands on DIY madness that allows you to turn cheap furniture into functional less cheap looking stuff. This parsons professor turned the Ikea take home bag and created this nifty dress. Its not funtional but it makes you think dont it?

She says, “I fashioned the top of the bag and one handle as the neckline and halter for the top of the dress. Then I cut open the seams of the rest of the bag to make a backless, A-Line outfit. I sewed darts in the front and back to be shapely for my bust and back. I cut the long handles off of two more bags to create ties for the back of the dress. Waterproof and ready to tote!

My camera broke so I took all of these picture on my Iphone. I made these overalls from a Japanese childrens pattern. I love it. It took me about an tow to make this I had to figure out what I was doing since I didn’t have instructions to follow just a few pictures.

I used medium weight dark indigo denim, and bone buttons

Smith and Butler, Eva Gentry and other things to do in Cobble Hill

Posted: November 9th, 2009 | Author: raven burgos | Filed under: Brooklyn, Current Affairs, Inspiration, Weblogs, fashion, style | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

2008_1205_1

I recently went to Smith and Butler in Brooklyn, the entire store was so pretty I wanted to move in. I wish I had gone there when I actually lived in the neighborhood. This picture came from the Sartorialist but im pretty sure you could buy this entire outfit at Smith and Butler. The store is wonderful and the sales guy a doll the owner was a bit icy.

While your there check out all the cool shops on Atlantic, including Eva Gentry

If your lucky Eva might help you pick something out and if your luckier Gentry might compliment you on it. I went to a BBQ at their house this summer, their home is amazing and they are an amazing couple with great taste, trust their opinion

Is there an item you are currently saving up to buy?
Eva: A 1965 white convertible Mustang.
Gentry: A 1949 Harley Chopper.

Any trends you like this season?
Eva: We feel most of our designers have a lot of freedom, and we appreciate each label's own aesthetic.
Gentry: Something sexy and something leather.

What should everyone have in their closet?
Eva: Every woman needs something that makes her feel sexy.
Gentry: Every man needs a great pair of boots.

Finish this sentence: I never leave home without …
Eva: Gold, diamonds, and something by Margiela.
Gentry: A lot of jewelry and a motorcycle helmet.

Silk Leapord Print Dress

Posted: October 31st, 2009 | Author: raven burgos | Filed under: DIY, Locally Made, sewing, style | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

I made this dress and only wore it once this summer. It has a scalloped hem. In theory it looked cute but it was sort of strange in reality. It originally went down to my ankles but now it goes to about my knee

I ended up only wearing it once, but I haven't worn it again since I shortened it.

I didnt use a pattern on this dress wither, but i should have, the tube part of the dress was too loose and uneven.

Sewing a wardrobe: Snake Skin Print Dress

Posted: October 31st, 2009 | Author: raven burgos | Filed under: Current Affairs, DIY, fashion, sewing, style | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

raven burgos

This dress is a silk stretch. i made it before i got my serger so i had to work really hard to maintain the elasticity o the fabric, since stitched tend to break on stretch fabrics.

raven burgos

I never wear it with heels, usually flip flops but its a really soft breathable dress. Whats nice about the silk is that it doesnt make the print look shiny or weird. It could go tacky very quickly with blends.

DSCN2642

I used no pattern btw. But becuase I liked the way this tuned out Im going to make one based off of tis with 5/8 seam allowances.
